Pasture Cropping
Pasture cropping is a technique of planting cereal crops straight into an existing pasture without spraying the paddock out. The resulting crop grows while the pasture is dormant over the cooler months. This technique was developed in Australia by Colin Sies, who still advocates its success.
At "The Gums", I have had success in pasture cropping since 2010. Our seed base has developed over the years to include pasture species, cereals, herbs, brassicas, turnips, grasses and legumes.
The main purpose of pasture cropping at "The Gums" is still to fill our winter feed gap, but we also take the opportunity to upgrade our pastures at the same time. The mature pasture cropped paddocks have been used for hay, grain and grazing.
